Artist Statement
I believe there is a math behind everything, even what
appears to be chaotic. I believe chaos is only our inability
to understand the logic behind any sequence of events. I
travel a lot as a designer for Nike, and have spent a good
deal of time in Asia, and have been inspired by the contrast
between the stark new development and the rotting and
molding of what is being so quickly replaced. The area where
I visit is a vast wasteland of cube like buildings, with a
grid of bath tiles scaling the walls. Little thought has
gone into a new era of aesthetics, and so much beauty and
adornment has been lost during the Chinese cultural
revolution. Amongst the factories are hand made walls, made
from stone, brick, tile and plaster, none of which seem to
be able to stand up to the constant moisture in the air.
Mildew splits the plaster revealing stone, stone crumbles
and has been patched up with brick, creating an interesting
camouflage pattern. Whether it’s man or nature induced,
nothing lasts forever and at some point the materials used
to create our surroundings will begin to wear and
disintegrate. This is what inspires me as an artist, and
gives me hope that what we are doing to the earth might not
be forever. When nature reclaims it’s materials with rust,
and mold there is a math to the way it’s broken apart and
disassembled, beautiful colours are created, drips,
splatters, and fading paint creating something new and
exciting, ever changing and alive.
About the Artist
Right now I’m fortunate enough to be designing for Nike,
which is one of the most progressive and environmentally
conscious companies out there. I’ve been trained in
Newcastle, England and Paris, France but graduated with my
Bachelors in design from the Emily Carr Institute of Art and
design in Vancouver, Canada.. Before I stumbled onto design,
I received my diploma of fine arts at Capilano College,
where I rediscovered my first love of making. I moved to
Portland 7 years ago for work and have found a home at
Everett Station Lofts, a wonderful artist community, where I
began painting again. I’ve had several shows and even ran my
own art gallery, milk studio, for a year and a half. My
weeks are filled with designing and weekends spent painting
and making. I have a wonderful partner, Matt who has been
sharing his life with me for the past three years. I love my
life right now.
